ITGA6 - Integrin Subunit Alpha 6

Abbreviation: ITGA6, CD49f, Integrin α6

Alternative Names: Alpha-6 Integrin, VLA-6 Alpha Subunit

Type: Cell-adhesion receptor subunit / laminin receptor / integrin family protein

Function: ITGA6 forms heterodimeric integrin receptors primarily with ITGB1 or ITGB4, generating α6β1 and α6β4 integrins. These receptors bind laminins in the extracellular matrix and regulate cell adhesion, migration, survival, differentiation, polarity, stemness, and intracellular signaling.

Cancer: ↑ ITGA6 is frequently overexpressed in cancer and is associated with tumor-cell proliferation, invasion, migration, metastasis, cancer stem-cell properties, angiogenesis, and resistance to therapy. High ITGA6 expression is also associated with poor prognosis in several tumor types.

Favorable Direction in Cancer: ↓ ITGA6 expression or signaling is generally favorable where α6-integrin promotes tumor growth, stemness, invasion, metastasis, or treatment resistance.
