| GGT1 (Gamma-Glutamyltransferase 1; GGT) — Cell-surface enzyme of the gamma-glutamyl cycle that hydrolyzes and transfers the gamma-glutamyl moiety of extracellular glutathione (GSH). GGT1 contributes to glutathione recycling, cysteine availability, redox homeostasis, xenobiotic metabolism, and cellular responses to oxidative stress. Typical modulation in cancer: ↑ GGT1 is frequently associated with tumor progression, enhanced glutathione utilization, resistance to oxidative stress, and resistance to chemotherapy. By supporting cysteine recovery and intracellular GSH synthesis, elevated GGT1 can improve tumor antioxidant capacity. However, GGT activity can also generate reactive intermediates under some conditions, so redox effects may be context-dependent. Typical modulation in Alzheimer’s disease: ↑ circulating GGT has been associated with increased oxidative stress and has been reported to be elevated in some Alzheimer’s disease cohorts. This is primarily considered a systemic oxidative-stress biomarker rather than a core AD-driving target. |
