Polyps — Abnormal tissue growths projecting from a mucosal surface. In cancer-prevention studies, the term most commonly refers to colorectal or intestinal polyps, particularly adenomatous polyps that can serve as precursor lesions for colorectal cancer.

Typical modulation: Polyp number ↓, polyp size ↓, polyp burden ↓, or recurrence ↓ are generally favorable outcomes. Increased polyp number, size, dysplasia, or progression is generally unfavorable.

Cancer relevance: High for colorectal cancer prevention and familial adenomatous polyposis studies. Adenomatous polyps are recognized precancerous lesions, whereas hyperplastic, inflammatory, and other polyp types may have different malignant potential.

Recommended interpretation: Record the most specific endpoint available, such as adenoma number, adenoma size, total polyp burden, advanced adenoma, or polyp recurrence, rather than using a generic polyp endpoint when the study provides histologic classification.
