| 3-MST - 3-Mercaptopyruvate Sulfurtransferase Type: Sulfurtransferase / hydrogen sulfide-producing enzyme Function: 3-MST is a sulfurtransferase encoded by MPST that generates hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and related reactive sulfur species primarily from 3-mercaptopyruvate, typically in cooperation with cysteine aminotransferase. 3-MST is present in both mitochondria and cytosol and contributes to mitochondrial bioenergetics, redox regulation, antioxidant defense, vascular signaling, and cellular stress responses. Cancer: ↕ Context-dependent. Increased 3-MST/MPST-derived H2S can support mitochondrial respiration, redox homeostasis, proliferation, survival, and metabolic adaptation in selected cancers. However, the role of 3-MST varies substantially among tumor types and is less consistently oncogenic than the CBS/H2S pathway. It is now clear that CBS, and/or CSE and/or 3-MST is overexpressed in many forms of cancer. |
