OGF - Opioid Growth Factor

Abbreviation: OGF, [Met5]-enkephalin, Methionine-Enkephalin, MENK

Type: Endogenous opioid peptide / growth-regulatory ligand

Function: OGF is an endogenous pentapeptide that binds the opioid growth factor receptor (OGFr) and tonically suppresses cell proliferation. OGF-OGFr signaling delays progression through the G1/S interface of the cell cycle by increasing cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitory pathways.

Cancer: ↓ Tumor-cell proliferation / ↑ growth inhibition. OGF has demonstrated antiproliferative activity in multiple cancer models by activating OGFr-dependent cell-cycle inhibition. Its effects are generally cytostatic rather than directly cytotoxic and are not primarily mediated by apoptosis.

Favorable Direction in Cancer: ↑ OGF signaling is generally favorable where the OGF-OGFr axis remains functional.

Interpretation Note: OGF is chemically [Met5]-enkephalin but its growth-regulatory effects are mediated primarily through OGFr rather than the classical μ-, δ-, or κ-opioid receptors.
