| CA12 (Carbonic Anhydrase XII; CA XII) — Membrane-associated zinc metalloenzyme that catalyzes the reversible hydration of carbon dioxide to bicarbonate and protons. CA12 contributes to extracellular and intracellular pH regulation, bicarbonate transport, cellular adaptation to hypoxia, and maintenance of the tumor microenvironment. Typical modulation in cancer: Frequently ↑ in multiple solid tumors and in some therapy-resistant cancer-cell populations. Elevated CA12 can support pH homeostasis, tumor-cell survival, migration, invasion, metastasis, and chemoresistance. However, prognostic significance varies by cancer type; for example, higher CA12 expression can correlate with more favorable luminal breast cancer phenotypes while being associated with poorer outcomes in some other malignancies. Typical modulation in Alzheimer’s disease: No well-established Alzheimer’s disease-associated direction. CA12 is primarily relevant to epithelial ion/pH homeostasis and cancer biology. |
