| Cell Shrinkage — Reduction in cellular volume and cytoplasmic size, commonly observed as an early morphologic feature of apoptosis. It is often accompanied by cytoplasmic condensation, chromatin condensation, membrane blebbing, and eventual formation of apoptotic bodies. Typical modulation in cancer: ↑ cell shrinkage is generally favorable when it reflects induction of apoptosis or treatment-related tumor-cell death. However, cell shrinkage alone is not specific for apoptosis and should ideally be interpreted together with other markers such as caspase activation, Annexin V positivity, DNA fragmentation, or nuclear condensation. Typical mechanistic relationship: Apoptotic signaling → ion and water loss → cell volume decrease → cytoplasmic condensation → membrane blebbing / apoptotic body formation. |
