Urea is the principal nitrogenous waste product formed in the liver through the urea cycle from ammonia generated during amino-acid metabolism. It is transported in blood and excreted mainly by the kidneys. Urea is a metabolite and clinical biomarker, not a molecular signalling target. Its direction is context-dependent: increased serum urea may indicate renal impairment, dehydration, protein catabolism, or treatment toxicity, while reduced urea may reflect impaired hepatic synthesis, malnutrition, or altered nitrogen metabolism.
