FFA/NEFA Cancer Research Results

FFA/NEFA, Free fatty acids — FFA / non-esterified fatty acids, NEFA: Click to Expand ⟱

Type: Biomarker
Free fatty acids may be measured in plasma, tumour tissue, culture medium, or intracellular lipid pools. They provide substrates for:

β-oxidation and ATP production;
membrane lipid synthesis;
lipid signalling;
eicosanoid production;
protein acylation.

However, excessive FFAs can cause lipotoxicity, ROS generation, ER stress, lipid peroxidation, or ferroptosis. Therefore, FFA ↑ is not automatically tumour-promoting or beneficial.
