Anemia

Type: Clinical phenotype / hematologic outcome

Function: Anemia is a reduction in the oxygen-carrying capacity of blood, typically reflected by decreased hemoglobin concentration, hematocrit, and/or red blood cell count. It can result from impaired erythropoiesis, nutritional deficiency, chronic inflammation, blood loss, hemolysis, bone marrow suppression, renal dysfunction, or treatment toxicity.

Cancer: ↑ Anemia is common in cancer and may result from the malignancy itself, chronic inflammation, nutritional deficiency, marrow infiltration, renal dysfunction, bleeding, chemotherapy, or radiotherapy. Increased anemia is associated with fatigue, reduced functional status, treatment intolerance, and in some settings poorer prognosis.

Favorable Direction: ↓ Anemia is favorable. When measured using laboratory variables, ↑ hemoglobin, ↑ hematocrit, and restoration of red blood cell count toward the normal range generally indicate improvement.
