Adenomatous Polyp Growth

Function: Adenomatous polyps are premalignant epithelial lesions of the colon and rectum that can accumulate additional genetic and epigenetic alterations and progress toward colorectal carcinoma. Experimental studies commonly assess adenoma number, size, volume, multiplicity, or overall tumor burden as measures of intestinal tumorigenesis.

Cancer: ↑ Increased adenomatous polyp formation or growth is unfavorable and reflects increased colorectal tumor initiation and/or progression. Adenomas are established precursor lesions in the adenoma-carcinoma sequence, although not every adenoma progresses to invasive cancer.

Favorable Direction in Cancer Prevention: ↓ Reduced adenoma formation, number, size, growth, or total polyp burden is favorable and indicates suppression of precancerous colorectal tumorigenesis.
