| Microgliosis - Reactive Microglial Activation / Microglial Proliferation Abbreviation: Microgliosis Type: Cellular response / neuropathology phenotype / neuroinflammatory outcome Function: Microgliosis describes increased microglial number, accumulation, proliferation, and/or activation in response to central nervous system injury, protein aggregates, infection, or inflammatory signals. Activated microglia can phagocytose cellular debris and aggregated proteins while also releasing cytokines, chemokines, reactive oxygen species, and other inflammatory mediators. Alzheimer's Disease: ↑ Microgliosis is a prominent feature of Alzheimer's disease, particularly around Aβ plaques. Microglial activation can initially facilitate Aβ phagocytosis and plaque containment, but chronic activation can contribute to neuroinflammation, oxidative stress, synaptic loss, tau pathology, and neuronal injury. Favorable Direction in Alzheimer's Disease: ↓ Excessive chronic or neurotoxic microgliosis is generally favorable, while preservation of appropriate microglial phagocytosis and homeostatic function may remain beneficial. Interpretation Note: Microgliosis should not be equated simply with harmful inflammation. Microglia exhibit heterogeneous states, and their effects depend on activation state, disease stage, location, and ability to clear Aβ and damaged tissue. |
