| VLDL (Very-Low-Density Lipoprotein) — Triglyceride-rich lipoprotein produced primarily by the liver that transports endogenous triglycerides, cholesterol, and other lipids through the circulation. VLDL particles are progressively lipolyzed to intermediate-density lipoprotein (IDL) and can ultimately contribute to formation of LDL particles. Typical modulation: ↑ VLDL, particularly VLDL cholesterol (VLDL-C) or triglyceride-rich VLDL particles, is generally associated with hypertriglyceridemia, insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome, and increased atherogenic lipoprotein burden. ↓ VLDL is generally favorable when baseline triglyceride-rich lipoproteins are elevated. Typical interpretation: VLDL should be distinguished from LDL and HDL. When a study specifically reports VLDL-C, record VLDL cholesterol rather than assuming that the measurement represents total VLDL particle number or concentration. |
