SCFAs are a group of small fatty acids produced mainly by microbial fermentation of dietary fibre. The principal intestinal SCFAs are acetate, propionate, and butyrate, but they differ substantially in concentration, tissue distribution, receptors, metabolism, and anticancer effects.

SCFAs ↓ often reflects dysbiosis and impaired microbial fermentation.
