Type:

Enterolactone

Abbreviation: ENL, EL

Type: Mammalian lignan / enterolignan / gut-microbiota-derived phytoestrogen metabolite

Source: Produced by intestinal microbiota from dietary lignans, commonly through conversion of enterodiol and related plant-lignan metabolites. Flaxseed is one of the richest dietary sources of enterolignan precursors.

Function: Enterolactone is a major circulating mammalian lignan and biologically active metabolite of dietary plant lignans. It can modulate estrogen-receptor signaling and has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antiproliferative, antiangiogenic, and antimetastatic activities in experimental models.

Cancer: ↓ Cancer-promoting activity / ↑ anticancer activity in many experimental contexts. Higher enterolactone exposure has been associated in several studies with reduced risk or improved outcomes in selected cancers, including breast, prostate, colorectal, and other cancers, although epidemiological findings are not completely consistent.

Favorable Direction in Cancer: ↑ Enterolactone exposure/activity is generally favorable in experimental and observational cancer literature, particularly where estrogen signaling, proliferation, angiogenesis, inflammation, or metastasis are involved.

Pathway Relationship: Plant lignans such as SDG/SECO → Enterodiol → Enterolactone.

Interpretation Note: Enterolactone is not present in high concentrations in the original plant food; it is produced by gut microbial metabolism. Therefore, flaxseed lignan content and circulating enterolactone concentration are related but are not equivalent measurements.
