| International Prostate Symptom Score Abbreviation: IPSS, I-PSS Type: Clinical outcome / lower urinary tract symptom severity scale / BPH symptom assessment Function: The International Prostate Symptom Score is a validated patient-reported questionnaire used to quantify lower urinary tract symptoms, particularly in patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia. It evaluates seven urinary symptoms: incomplete emptying, frequency, intermittency, urgency, weak urinary stream, straining, and nocturia. Scoring: The seven symptom questions are each scored from 0 to 5, producing a total symptom score ranging from 0 to 35. Higher scores indicate greater symptom severity. The IPSS also includes a separate quality-of-life/bother question. BPH: ↑ IPSS indicates more severe lower urinary tract symptoms and greater disease burden. Favorable Direction: ↓ IPSS is favorable and indicates improvement in urinary symptoms. A reduction of approximately 3 points is commonly considered a clinically meaningful improvement. Interpretation Note: The IPSS measures symptom severity and treatment response but does not by itself establish that the symptoms are caused by prostate enlargement or bladder outlet obstruction. |
