| PGE3 - Prostaglandin E3 Abbreviation: PGE3 Type: EPA-derived prostaglandin / 3-series eicosanoid lipid mediator Function: Bioactive prostaglandin derived from eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) through cyclooxygenase-dependent metabolism. PGE3 can signal through prostaglandin E receptors and generally produces less pro-inflammatory signaling than the arachidonic-acid-derived PGE2. It participates in regulation of inflammation, proliferation, apoptosis, angiogenesis, and immune-cell behavior. Cancer: ↑ Generally associated with anti-cancer activity. Increased PGE3 formation from EPA can inhibit tumor-cell proliferation, angiogenesis, invasion, and survival and can promote apoptosis. PGE3 may also suppress tumor-promoting macrophage polarization and contribute to the anticancer effects of EPA and omega-3 fatty acids. |
