Sphingosine kinases (commonly abbreviated as SK, with SK1 and SK2 being the main isoforms) are enzymes that catalyze the phosphorylation of sphingosine to produce sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P).
S1P is a bioactive signaling lipid that regulates cell growth, survival, migration, and angiogenesis. Elevated levels of S1P can promote proliferation and inhibit apoptosis (programmed cell death).
-In many types of cancer, SK (especially SK1) is found to be overexpressed, leading to increased production of S1P. This can contribute to tumor growth, metastasis, and resistance to chemotherapy.
