MicroRNA-542 (miR-542) produces the mature strands miR-542-3p and miR-542-5p, which regulate distinct messenger-RNA targets and should be recorded separately whenever the strand is identified. In many cancers, miR-542-3p ↓ is the predominant reported pattern, and miR-542-3p generally functions as a tumour-suppressive microRNA. Restoration or miR-542-3p ↑ can inhibit cancer-cell proliferation, migration, invasion, epithelial-mesenchymal transition, glycolysis, and tumour growth while promoting apoptosis or cell-cycle arrest. Reported targets and pathways include CDK14, ILK, survivin/BIRC5, PI3K/AKT, WNT/β-catenin, ERK1/2, JAK2, and TGF-β signalling. miR-542-3p can also enhance p53 signalling in susceptible cancer cells. The biological effect remains tumour- and target-dependent, and miR-542-5p must not be assumed to have the same targets or direction as miR-542-3p.
