ECGF1 - Endothelial Cell Growth Factor 1 / Thymidine Phosphorylase

Abbreviation: ECGF1, TYMP, TP, PD-ECGF

Type: Pyrimidine metabolism enzyme / angiogenic factor

Function: Thymidine phosphorylase catalyzes the reversible phosphorolysis of thymidine and deoxyuridine and participates in the pyrimidine nucleoside salvage pathway. The same protein was historically identified as platelet-derived endothelial cell growth factor (PD-ECGF/ECGF1). Its activity can promote endothelial-cell migration, angiogenesis, tumor-cell survival, and resistance to apoptosis.

Cancer: ↑ Frequently increased in tumor cells and the tumor microenvironment. Elevated ECGF1/TYMP can promote angiogenesis, tumor progression, and resistance to apoptosis and has been associated with aggressive disease and poorer prognosis in several malignancies. TYMP also affects fluoropyrimidine chemotherapy by activating drugs such as 5'-deoxy-5-fluorouridine and capecitabine-derived metabolites, making its treatment effect context-dependent.
