Type:

H+/K+-ATPase - Hydrogen-Potassium ATPase / Gastric Proton Pump

Abbreviation: H+/K+-ATPase, H-K ATPase

Major Subunits: ATP4A, ATP4B

Type: P-type ATPase / proton-potassium ion pump

Function: H+/K+-ATPase is an ATP-dependent membrane transporter that exchanges intracellular H+ for extracellular K+. The gastric H+/K+-ATPase, composed primarily of ATP4A and ATP4B, is responsible for secretion of hydrochloric acid by gastric parietal cells and is the pharmacological target of proton-pump inhibitors.

Cancer: ↕ Context-dependent. Altered expression of H+/K+-ATPase subunits has been reported in several cancers, and inhibition of proton transport can influence intracellular pH regulation, proliferation, apoptosis, and tumor-cell survival. However, the direction and relevance vary substantially by tumor type and by whether gastric or non-gastric proton pumps are being studied.
