A ketogenic diet is high in fats and low in carbohydrates, which shifts the body’s metabolism to produce ketone bodies (such as β-hydroxybutyrate and acetoacetate) as an alternative energy source.
The three main ketone bodies are:
-Beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB): The most abundant and commonly measured ketone in the blood.
-Acetoacetate: Can be measured in both the blood and urine.
-Acetone: Often measured in the breath; it is a byproduct of acetoacetate breakdown.

1. Blood Ketone Meters (accurate, fast)
-Nutritional ketosis is often defined by BHB levels between 0.5 to 3.0 mmol/L.
2. Urine Ketone Strips (urine test may not accurately reflect blood levels)
3. Breath Ketone Analyzers(not always perfectly correlate with blood BHB concentrations.)

1810- dietKeto,  Oxy,    The Ketogenic Diet and Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Prolong Survival in Mice with Systemic Metastatic Cancer
- in-vivo, Var, NA
BG↓, KD alone significantly decreased blood glucose, slowed tumor growth, and increased mean survival time by 56.7% in mice with systemic metastatic cancer.
TumCG↓,
OS↑,
eff↑, While HBO2T alone did not influence cancer progression, combining the KD with HBO2T elicited a significant decrease in blood glucose, tumor growth rate, and 77.9% increase in mean survival time compared to controls.
Dose∅, Mice undergoing HBO2T received 100% O2 for 90 minutes at 1.5 ATM gauge (2.5 ATM absolute) three times per week (M, W, F) in a hyperbaric chamber (Model 1300B, Sechrist Industries, Anaheim, CA).
KeyT↑, only the KD+HBO2T animals showed significantly increased ketones compared to controls
eff↑, we hypothesized that combining these non-toxic treatments would provide a powerful, synergistic anti-cancer effect.
cachexia↓, While low carbohydrate or ketogenic diets promote weight loss in overweight individuals, they are also known to spare muscle wasting during conditions of energy restriction and starvation
ChemoSen↑, KD improves quality of life and enhances the efficacy of chemotherapy treatment in the clinic
*ROS↓, ketone body metabolism protects cells from oxidative damage by decreasing ROS production. cancer cells are unable to effectively metabolize ketone bodies; we do not expect that ketones would confer the same protective effects onto the cancer cells
ROS↑, HBO2T increases ROS production within the cell which can lead to membrane lipid peroxidation and cell death
lipid-P↑,
selectivity↑, KD weakens cancer cells by glucose restriction and the inherent anti-cancer effects of ketone bodies while simultaneously conferring a protective advantage to the healthy tissue capable of ketone metabolism.
toxicity∅, HBO2T should be considered a safe treatment for patients with varying malignancies and that there is no convincing evidence its use promotes cancer progression or recurrence

2644- MCT,    The Effects of Medium-Chain Triglyceride Oil Supplementation on Endurance Performance and Substrate Utilization in Healthy Populations: A Systematic Review
- Review, Nor, NA
*KeyT↑, Although ketones were increased when supplementing with MCTs,
*Dose↝, Thirty grams of MCTs seems to be the safe maximal dosage to minimize adverse reactions during or after exercise.
eff↑, MCTs are a better immediate energy source than LCTs due to their rapid absorption and beta-oxidation. Only a very small percentage of MCTs (less than 2%) contribute to fat storage, and most MCTs are converted to energy for immediate use in the body.

3902- MCT,    Effects of Caprylic Triglyceride on Cognitive Performance and Cerebral Glucose Metabolism in Mild Alzheimer’s Disease: A Single-Case Observation
- Case Report, AD, NA
*cognitive↑, After 109 days of CT, MoCA scores changed from a baseline value of 24–28, and MMSE scores changed from 23 to 28.
*KeyT↑, It is possible to induce ketosis without dietary modification with special fats called medium chain triglycerides (MCTs).

3903- MCT,    Retrospective case studies of the efficacy of caprylic triglyceride in mild-to-moderate Alzheimer’s disease
- Case Report, AD, NA
*KeyT↑, Consumption of sufficient quantities of caprylic triglyceride (CT) increases plasma concentrations of ketone bodies and may be beneficial in conditions of compromised glucose metabolism, such as AD.
*cognitive↑, rate of decline in MMSE scores appeared slower than previously published reports for patients treated with pharmacotherapy alone.
*eff↑, Caprylic triglyceride-based medical foods have been prescribed to patients with mild-to-moderate AD for several years based on results in clinical trials.6,7

3904- MCT,    Retrospective cohort study of the efficacy of caprylic triglyceride in patients with mild-to-moderate alzheimer’s disease
- Human, AD, NA
*memory↑, Caregiver assessments indicated that most patients were stable or improved with respect to memory and ability to carry out activities of daily living.
*cognitive↑,
*KeyT↑, 20 g of caprylic triglyceride (CT) increases blood levels of beta-hydroxybutyrate (the major ketone body in humans) 2 hours post dose to a mean value of 0.39 mM,

3905- MCT,    Medium Chain Triglycerides induce mild ketosis and may improve cognition in Alzheimer's disease. A systematic review and meta-analysis of human studies
- Review, AD, NA
*cognitive↑, showed a trend towards cognitive improvement on ADAS-Cog (MD = − 0.539; 95% CI, −1.239 - 0.161, I2 = 0%), and significantly improved cognition when combining ADAS-Cog with MMSE
*KeyT↑, MCTs can induce mild ketosis and may improve cognition in patients with mild cognitive impairment and Alzheimer’s disease.
*eff↑, The main approaches taken to date to increase ketones in blood and consequently brain, are through fasting (Mattson et al., 2018), exercising
*other↑, Human breast milk is a natural source of MCTs (Andreas et al., 2015), but, in adult life, the major food-derived sources of MCTs are palm kernel oil and coconut oil
*toxicity↓, MCT supplements are concentrated palm kernel and coconut oils and are generally considered safe
