MicroRNA-490 (miR-490) produces two mature strands, miR-490-3p and miR-490-5p, which can regulate different messenger-RNA targets and should be recorded separately whenever the study identifies the strand. In many cancers, miR-490 is the more commonly reported pattern, and both miR-490-3p and miR-490-5p frequently function as tumour-suppressive microRNAs. Restoration or miR-490 has been associated with reduced proliferation, migration, invasion, epithelial-mesenchymal transition, tumour growth, and treatment resistance, together with increased apoptosis in susceptible cancer models. Reported targets include CCND1, ERGIC3, VDAC1, c-FOS, and other tumour- and strand-specific genes. However, oncogenic activity has been reported for miR-490-3p in selected settings, including some hepatocellular carcinoma models. The typical cancer-associated direction is miR-490, while treatment-induced miR-490 is usually interpreted as beneficial. Cancer review; miR-490-3p colorectal cancer study.
