MicroRNA-545 (miR-545; principally miR-545-3p, with miR-545-5p as the alternate mature strand) is a small non-coding RNA that regulates gene expression through transcript degradation or translational repression. In many cancers, miR-545-3p ↓ has been reported and restoration of miR-545 can inhibit proliferation, migration, invasion, epithelial-mesenchymal transition, tumour growth, and treatment resistance. Reported tumour-suppressive targets and pathways include RIG-I/DDX58, PLK1, ZEB2/WNT/β-catenin, LAMC2, HK2, and MT1M. However, miR-545 can act oncogenically in selected settings: miR-545 has been associated with increased proliferation and poorer prognosis in some hepatocellular and colorectal cancer studies. -miR-545-3p ↓ is commonly adverse and restoration is often anticancer, but miR-545 ↑ can be oncogenic in selected cancers.
