Type:

NEU1 (neuraminidase 1; lysosomal sialidase 1) is a glycohydrolase that removes terminal sialic-acid residues from glycoproteins and glycolipids. NEU1 functions mainly in lysosomes but can also participate in cell-surface receptor regulation, adhesion, autophagy, inflammation and growth factor signalling. Altered NEU1 activity can modify the sialylation, stability and signalling of receptors and adhesion molecules, thereby affecting proliferation, survival, migration and invasion. Its role in cancer is context-dependent: increased NEU1 has promoted tumour growth or migration in some models, whereas reduced NEU1 has increased aggressiveness in others, including reported cervical-cancer models.
