Peak Expiratory Flow (PEF)

Definition: Peak expiratory flow is the maximum airflow achieved during a forceful expiration starting from full lung inflation.

Asthma relevance: PEF is commonly used to monitor variable airflow obstruction in asthma. Reduced PEF or excessive day-to-day variability can reflect worsening airway obstruction, while improvement can indicate bronchodilation or improved asthma control.
