miR-339-5p - MicroRNA-339-5p

Abbreviation: miR-339-5p

Type: MicroRNA / post-transcriptional gene-expression regulator

Function: miR-339-5p is a regulatory microRNA that binds complementary sequences within target mRNAs and suppresses their expression through mRNA degradation and/or translational inhibition. Reported targets include MDM2, BACE1, and other genes involved in proliferation, survival, invasion, and signaling.

Cancer: ↓ Frequently reduced in cancer and predominantly functions as a tumor-suppressive microRNA. miR-339-5p can directly inhibit MDM2, thereby enhancing p53 activity, apoptosis, senescence, and growth arrest. Increased miR-339-5p has also been shown to suppress cancer-cell proliferation, migration, invasion, and tumor growth.

Alzheimer's Disease: ↓ Reduced miR-339-5p has been reported in Alzheimer's disease brain tissue. miR-339-5p directly suppresses BACE1 expression; therefore, loss of miR-339-5p can contribute to increased BACE1 activity and increased amyloidogenic APP processing and Aβ production.

Favorable Direction: ↑ Restoration or increased miR-339-5p activity is generally favorable in both cancer and Alzheimer's disease contexts.
