The P44 protein, also known as p44 or p44/ERK1, is a member of the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) family, specifically the extracellular signal-regulated kinases (ERKs). These proteins play a crucial role in various cellular processes, including proliferation, differentiation, and survival, and are involved in signaling pathways that can influence cancer development and progression

p44 tends to be overexpressed in several hormone–driven and other cancers, correlating with more aggressive disease and poorer prognosis, thereby acting in a protumorigenic manner.
