MPOD is a measure of the concentration of macular pigments—primarily lutein, zeaxanthin, and meso-zeaxanthin—in the central retina (macula). These pigments are potent antioxidants and blue-light filters, and they help protect retinal and neural tissue from oxidative damage. -MPOD is often reduced in AD patients -MPOD can be measured non-invasively (with heterochromatic flicker photometry or similar tools), it may help in early identification of individuals at risk of cognitive decline. |
