<span class="wphighlight">TK1</span> phosphorylates thymidine in the nucleotide salvage pathway, helping produce thymidine nucleotides for DNA synthesis. Its expression rises strongly during S phase, making it a useful indicator of active cell proliferation. Serum <span class="wphighlight">TK1</span> has been investigated for tumor detection, prognosis, treatment monitoring, recurrence and tumor burden. <span class="wphighlight">TK1</span> is more firmly established as a proliferation biomarker than as a routinely drugged therapeutic target.
