| Ferroportin (FPN; gene symbol SLC40A1) is the principal cellular iron-export protein. It transports iron out of cells and is negatively regulated by hepcidin, which promotes ferroportin internalization and degradation. In many cancers, reduced ferroportin expression decreases iron export, increases intracellular iron retention, and may support proliferation and tumour progression. Therefore, FPN ↓ is commonly tumour-promoting, while FPN ↑ generally lowers intracellular iron; however, increased iron export may also reduce ferroptosis sensitivity.
