Labile iron pool (LIP) is the intracellular
pool of loosely bound, redox-active, and chelatable iron that is available
for metabolism, storage, export, and Fenton chemistry. It is distinct from
total cellular iron, ferritin-bound iron, and circulating serum iron. In
cancer, LIP ↑ can support proliferation and
iron-dependent metabolism, but excessive LIP also increases reactive oxygen
species, lipid peroxidation, and susceptibility to ferroptosis. Therefore,
LIP is best classified as a functional iron biomarker, with
its biological interpretation dependent on oxidative stress and antioxidant
capacity. Record the measured compartment and assay whenever available.
