| APE1 - Apurinic/Apyrimidinic Endonuclease 1 / Redox Effector Factor 1 Abbreviation: APE1, APEX1, Ref-1 Type: DNA repair enzyme / redox regulatory protein Function: Multifunctional protein that performs apurinic/apyrimidinic endonuclease activity in the base-excision repair (BER) pathway and also regulates the redox state and DNA-binding activity of transcription factors including NF-κB, HIF-1α, STAT3, and AP-1. APE1 supports DNA repair, oxidative-stress resistance, cell survival, angiogenesis, and transcriptional signaling. Cancer: ↑ Frequently increased or activated in cancer. Elevated APE1/Ref-1 promotes DNA-damage repair, tumor-cell survival, proliferation, angiogenesis, and resistance to chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Inhibition of APE1 DNA-repair or redox activity can increase tumor-cell sensitivity to DNA-damaging therapies and suppress oncogenic transcription-factor signaling. |
