| miR-124-3p - MicroRNA-124-3p Abbreviation: miR-124-3p, miR-124 Type: MicroRNA / post-transcriptional gene regulator Function: Neuron-enriched regulatory microRNA that controls expression of numerous genes involved in proliferation, differentiation, apoptosis, inflammation, neuronal function, and cellular plasticity. miR-124-3p generally suppresses oncogenic signaling and also regulates neuronal proteins involved in neurodegenerative processes. Cancer: ↓ Frequently decreased in multiple cancers and generally functions as a tumor suppressor. Loss of miR-124-3p can promote proliferation, migration, invasion, epithelial-mesenchymal transition, and tumor progression, whereas restoration of miR-124-3p suppresses malignant behavior through inhibition of multiple oncogenic targets. Alzheimer's Disease: ↓ Reduced miR-124-3p has been reported in Alzheimer's disease and can contribute to increased CAPN1/calpain-1 activity, p35-to-p25 cleavage, and neuronal apoptosis. Restoration of miR-124 can also suppress BACE1-associated amyloidogenic processing and improve cognitive and pathological outcomes in experimental Alzheimer's disease models. |
