| NOX1 - NADPH Oxidase 1 Type: NADPH oxidase / reactive oxygen species-generating enzyme Function: NOX1 is a membrane-associated NADPH oxidase that transfers electrons from NADPH to molecular oxygen to generate superoxide and downstream reactive oxygen species. NOX1-derived ROS participate in redox signaling, proliferation, host defense, inflammation, angiogenesis, migration, and cellular stress responses. Cancer: ↑ Frequently increased or activated, particularly in colorectal and other gastrointestinal cancers. Elevated NOX1-derived ROS can promote RAS/MAPK and Wnt/β-catenin signaling, proliferation, angiogenesis, invasion, genomic instability, and tumor progression. Alzheimer's Disease: ↑ Increased NOX1 expression has been reported in Alzheimer's disease brain, particularly during earlier disease stages, and may contribute to oxidative stress and neuroinflammatory signaling. Evidence is less extensive than for NOX2. |
