Function: FABP5 binds long-chain fatty acids and other hydrophobic ligands and transports them between cellular compartments. It regulates fatty-acid uptake and trafficking, lipid metabolism, transcriptional signaling, cellular proliferation, differentiation, inflammatory responses, and metabolic adaptation. FABP5 can deliver lipid ligands to nuclear receptors including PPARβ/δ and thereby influence gene expression involved in survival and lipid metabolism.

Cancer: ↑ Frequently overexpressed in cancer and generally associated with a tumor-promoting phenotype. Elevated FABP5 can support fatty-acid utilization, metabolic reprogramming, proliferation, survival, migration, invasion, metastasis, cancer stem-like properties, immune-microenvironment changes, and treatment resistance. High tumor FABP5 expression is associated with poor prognosis in multiple cancers, although tumor-suppressive effects have been reported in selected cancer types.
