MEF2D - Myocyte Enhancer Factor 2D

Type: Transcription factor / MADS-box MEF2 family member

Function: MEF2D is a transcription factor that regulates cellular differentiation, proliferation, survival, apoptosis, stress responses, and neuronal function. Its transcriptional activity is controlled by intracellular signaling pathways including calcium-dependent signaling, MAPK pathways, GSK3β, HDACs, and transcriptional co-activators such as CBP/p300.

Cancer: ↕ Context-dependent. MEF2D can function as an oncogenic transcription factor in several cancers, promoting proliferation, migration, survival, and resistance to therapy. Increased MEF2D is associated with aggressive behavior in cancers including ovarian and colorectal carcinoma, while MEF2D rearrangements are oncogenic drivers in a subset of B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia. However, MEF2D can have different or tumor-suppressive functions depending on cellular and transcriptional context.
