| ACE2 - Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme 2 Abbreviation: ACE2 Type: Zinc metallopeptidase / carboxypeptidase / renin-angiotensin system regulator Function: ACE2 is a membrane-associated carboxypeptidase that counterbalances the classical ACE/angiotensin II pathway. It converts angiotensin II to angiotensin-(1-7) and can convert angiotensin I to angiotensin-(1-9). The ACE2/Ang-(1-7)/Mas receptor axis generally opposes the vasoconstrictive, inflammatory, oxidative, and fibrotic effects of the ACE/Ang II/AT1 receptor pathway. ACE2 is structurally related to ACE but is encoded by a separate gene and is not inhibited by conventional ACE inhibitors. Cancer: ↕ Context-dependent. ACE2 can influence tumor growth, angiogenesis, inflammation, invasion, and metastasis through regulation of the renin-angiotensin system. Increased ACE2/Ang-(1-7)/Mas signaling is tumor-suppressive in several experimental cancers, but ACE2 expression and its effects vary substantially by tumor type and tissue context. |
