CCN1 - Cellular Communication Network Factor 1 / Cysteine-Rich Angiogenic Inducer 61

Abbreviation: CCN1, CYR61

Type: Matricellular protein / extracellular signaling protein

Function: CCN1 is a secreted extracellular-matrix-associated protein of the CCN family that regulates cell adhesion, migration, proliferation, survival, angiogenesis, inflammation, fibrosis, and cellular senescence. It interacts with several integrins and heparan sulfate proteoglycans, allowing it to produce different cellular responses depending on receptor and tissue context.

Cancer: ↕ Context-dependent, with a predominantly tumor-promoting pattern in many solid cancers. Increased CCN1/CYR61 can promote proliferation, survival, angiogenesis, migration, invasion, metastasis, cancer stem-like properties, tumor-microenvironment remodeling, and treatment resistance. However, CCN1 can also induce apoptosis or senescence through specific integrin-dependent pathways in some cellular contexts.
