Full Name: Forced Expiratory Volume in 1 Second

Definition: FEV1 is the volume of air that can be forcibly exhaled during the first second of a forced expiratory maneuver. It is one of the principal spirometric measurements used to assess airflow obstruction.

Asthma relevance: FEV1 may decrease during bronchoconstriction or poorly controlled asthma and increase following effective bronchodilation or improved disease control. Bronchodilator reversibility in FEV1 is commonly used in asthma assessment.
