Lymphocytes

Definition: Lymphocytes are adaptive and innate immune cells including T cells, B cells, and related lymphoid populations that regulate antigen-specific and cytokine- mediated immune responses.

Asthma relevance: Airway lymphocyte numbers may increase during allergic and chronic airway inflammation. BALF lymphocyte counts are commonly included in differential cell counts in animal asthma studies, although total lymphocytes are less specific than individual populations such as Th2, Th17, Treg, or ILC2 cells.

Direction:
Lymphocytes ↑ = generally associated with increased airway inflammation, but interpretation depends on lymphocyte subtype
Lymphocytes ↓ = may indicate reduced inflammation, but is not universally beneficial because regulatory lymphocyte populations can be protective

Common measurement contexts: BALF lymphocytes; sputum lymphocytes; airway tissue lymphocytes
