Chromatin Condensation

Type: Cellular phenotype / nuclear morphology / apoptosis-associated outcome

Function: Chromatin condensation is the physical compaction of nuclear chromatin. It occurs physiologically during chromosome condensation in mitosis and can also occur during cellular stress and apoptosis. In apoptosis, chromatin typically condenses at the nuclear periphery and may subsequently undergo nuclear fragmentation.

Cancer: ↑ When induced by an anticancer treatment, chromatin condensation is commonly interpreted as evidence of apoptosis and therefore represents a favorable treatment-associated effect. However, chromatin condensation occurring during normal mitosis should not be interpreted as apoptosis.
