ATF1 - Activating Transcription Factor 1

Type: Transcription factor / CREB-ATF family member

Function: ATF1 is a transcription factor in the CREB/ATF family that binds cAMP-response elements and regulates genes involved in proliferation, survival, differentiation, metabolism, and cellular stress responses. Its transcriptional activity is controlled by phosphorylation and interactions with transcriptional cofactors.

Cancer: ↑ Frequently overexpressed or activated in multiple cancers and associated with increased proliferation, survival, migration, invasion, therapeutic resistance, and poor prognosis. ATF1 also participates directly in oncogenic gene fusions; the EWSR1-ATF1 fusion is a characteristic driver of clear cell sarcoma and occurs in several other rare tumors.
