Event-Free Survival - EFS

Type: Clinical outcome / oncology efficacy endpoint

Function: Event-Free Survival is the time from a defined starting point, such as diagnosis, treatment initiation, or randomization, until the occurrence of a prespecified adverse event. Depending on the study, events may include disease progression, relapse, treatment failure, development of a second malignancy, or death from any cause.

Cancer: ↑ Longer EFS indicates a longer period without a predefined adverse clinical event and is therefore generally favorable. ↓ EFS indicates earlier progression, relapse, treatment failure, second malignancy, death, or another protocol-defined event and is unfavorable.

Favorable Direction: ↑ Longer Event-Free Survival.

Interpretation Note: The exact definition of an "event" varies between clinical trials, so EFS values should be interpreted using the event criteria specified by the individual study.
