miR-326-5p - MicroRNA-326-5p

Abbreviation: miR-326-5p, miR-326

Type: MicroRNA / post-transcriptional gene-expression regulator

Function: miR-326-5p is a mature microRNA derived from MIR326 that regulates gene expression by binding complementary sequences in target mRNAs, promoting mRNA degradation or translational repression. It participates in regulation of proliferation, apoptosis, differentiation, inflammation, metabolism, and oncogenic signaling.

Cancer: ↓ miR-326-5p is reduced in several cancers and most commonly functions as a tumor-suppressive microRNA. Restoration of miR-326-5p can inhibit cancer-cell proliferation, migration and invasion and promote apoptosis by suppressing oncogenic targets such as PNO1, ITGA5 and other context-dependent targets.

Favorable Direction in Cancer: ↑ Restoration of miR-326-5p is generally favorable where it functions as a tumor-suppressor miRNA.

Alzheimer's Disease: ↓ / insufficient miR-326 activity may be unfavorable. Experimental miR-326 overexpression reduced VAV1 expression, JNK signaling, tau phosphorylation, neuronal apoptosis, Aβ deposition, and Aβ40/Aβ42 levels and improved cognitive performance in an Alzheimer's disease mouse model.

Favorable Direction in Alzheimer's Disease: ↑ miR-326 activity appears favorable based on experimental evidence.

Interpretation Note: Some older studies report “miR-326” without distinguishing the 5p and 3p mature strands. When a paper specifically measures miR-326-5p, record it as miR-326-5p rather than assuming all historical miR-326 findings are strand-specific.
