Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale

Abbreviation: UPDRS, MDS-UPDRS

Type: Clinical outcome / Parkinson's disease severity scale / motor and non-motor assessment

Function: The UPDRS is a standardized clinical rating scale used to assess the severity and progression of Parkinson's disease. The modern MDS-UPDRS evaluates non-motor experiences of daily living, motor experiences of daily living, objective motor examination findings, and motor complications.

Parkinson's Disease: ↑ UPDRS/MDS-UPDRS score indicates greater disease severity, functional impairment, motor dysfunction, or treatment complications.

Favorable Direction: ↓ UPDRS or MDS-UPDRS score is favorable and indicates improvement in Parkinson's disease symptoms or functional status.

Interpretation Note: Total UPDRS scores and individual subscale scores should be distinguished when possible. In particular, MDS-UPDRS Part III is the motor examination and is frequently reported separately in clinical studies.
