Type:

Enterodiol

Abbreviation: END, ED

Type: Mammalian lignan / enterolignan / gut-microbiota-derived phytoestrogen metabolite

Source: Produced by intestinal microbiota from dietary plant lignans, including secoisolariciresinol and related lignan precursors derived from foods such as flaxseed, sesame, whole grains, legumes, fruits, and vegetables.

Function: Enterodiol is an intermediate mammalian lignan produced during microbial metabolism of plant lignans and can be further converted to enterolactone. It has weak estrogenic and antiestrogenic activity and may influence estrogen-receptor signaling, oxidative stress, inflammation, and cell proliferation.

Cancer: ↕ Context-dependent but generally protective/anticancer in experimental models. Enterodiol has demonstrated antiproliferative effects in selected cancer cells, including colon cancer models, and may contribute to the cancer-preventive effects associated with lignan-rich diets.

Pathway Relationship: Plant lignans such as SDG/SECO → Enterodiol → Enterolactone.

Interpretation Note: Enterodiol is generated by gut microbiota and should be distinguished from its plant lignan precursors. Exposure can vary substantially depending on gut-microbiome composition and lignan metabolism.
