| miR-590-3p - MicroRNA-590-3p Abbreviation: miR-590-3p Type: MicroRNA / post-transcriptional gene-expression regulator Function: miR-590-3p is a mature microRNA derived from MIR590 that regulates gene expression by binding target mRNAs and promoting translational repression or mRNA degradation. Its targets vary substantially by tissue and disease context. Cancer: ↕ Context-dependent. miR-590-3p functions as a tumor suppressor in several cancers, including breast cancer and glioblastoma, where restoration can reduce proliferation, migration, invasion, epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition, and metastasis or increase apoptosis. Reported targets include SIRT1, ZEB1, ZEB2, SNAI2/Slug, ATF3, RUNX2, and TEAD1. In contrast, miR-590-3p can act as an oncogenic miRNA in colorectal cancer, where increased expression has been associated with proliferation, invasion, metastasis, Hippo/YAP activation, and Wnt/β-catenin signaling. Favorable Direction in Cancer: Context-dependent. ↑ miR-590-3p is favorable where it acts as a tumor-suppressive miRNA, whereas ↓ miR-590-3p may be favorable in colorectal cancer and other settings where it functions as an oncomiR. Alzheimer's Disease: ↕ / preliminary evidence. Reduced miR-590-3p expression has been observed in peripheral blood mononuclear cells from Alzheimer's disease patients and was inversely correlated with hnRNP-A1 expression, but the disease direction is not yet sufficiently established for a firm universal arrow. Interpretation Note: miR-590-3p should not be assigned a universal cancer direction. Tumor type and experimentally validated downstream target should determine whether increased or decreased miR-590-3p is favorable. |
