SNAP25 - Synaptosome Associated Protein 25

Abbreviation: SNAP25, SNAP-25

Type: SNARE complex protein / presynaptic protein / synaptic vesicle fusion regulator

Function: SNAP-25 is a presynaptic membrane-associated protein and core component of the neuronal SNARE complex. Together with syntaxin and VAMP/synaptobrevin, SNAP-25 mediates docking and fusion of synaptic vesicles with the presynaptic membrane and is essential for calcium-dependent neurotransmitter release.

Alzheimer's Disease: ↓ SNAP-25 expression or synaptic SNAP-25 function is associated with synaptic degeneration and impaired neurotransmission in Alzheimer's disease. Loss of SNAP-25-containing presynaptic terminals reflects deterioration of synaptic integrity.

Favorable Direction in Alzheimer's Disease: ↑ Preservation or restoration of normal SNAP-25 expression and synaptic function is generally favorable.

Biomarker Note: ↑ SNAP-25 concentration in cerebrospinal fluid can indicate increased synaptic or neuronal injury and should not be interpreted the same way as ↑ SNAP-25 expression within functional brain synapses.

Cancer: ↕ Context-dependent / insufficient evidence for a useful general cancer direction.

Interpretation Note: Distinguish tissue or neuronal SNAP-25 expression from extracellular or CSF SNAP-25 used as a biomarker of synaptic damage.
