| Astrocytosis - Reactive Astrogliosis Abbreviation: Astrogliosis, Reactive Astrocytosis Type: Cellular response / neuropathology phenotype / neuroinflammatory outcome Function: Astrocytosis describes an increase in the number, size, or reactive state of astrocytes in response to neuronal injury, inflammation, protein aggregation, or other central nervous system stress. Reactive astrocytes undergo morphological, transcriptional, and functional changes and commonly show increased markers such as GFAP. Alzheimer's Disease: ↑ Reactive astrocytosis is a prominent feature of Alzheimer's disease and commonly occurs around Aβ plaques and areas of neurodegeneration. Chronic reactive astrocytes can contribute to neuroinflammation, altered metabolism, impaired synaptic support, and defective Aβ clearance. Favorable Direction in Alzheimer's Disease: ↓ Excessive or chronic pathological astrocytosis is generally favorable, particularly when accompanied by restoration of normal homeostatic astrocyte function. However, complete suppression of astrocyte responses is not necessarily beneficial because reactive astrocytes can also perform protective and clearance functions. Interpretation Note: Astrocytosis should not automatically be interpreted as equivalent to neurotoxic astrocyte activity. Reactive astrocytes are heterogeneous and can exhibit protective, inflammatory, or neurotoxic phenotypes depending on disease stage and microenvironment. |
